Confessions of St Driscoll
Confessions of a Reformission Rev.: Hard Lessons from an Emerging Missional Church by Mark Driscoll
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I was expecting to be shocked by this book, but perhaps we’re all Driscoll-desensitized now. Sounds like Mark was just what Seattle needed. Lots of wisdom from hard knocks, teachability, but above all, persistence for Jesus. There is also a lot of structural / organizational advice which doesn’t apply to me, but great for pastors. Biggest lesson at the end for me was his hatred of the comfort zone. As soon as things get comfortable, it’s time to look for, or pray for, a new challenge to keep people focussed, united and trusting in God. If we fail to do this, we drop the ball and our decline begins. A good read.

I think the “shock” factor is lost on Australians. Honestly, I have heard far “worse” from guys here. I think the American puritanical baggage makes him seem really risqué etc but I think he’s pretty tame & conservative.
That said, his appeal down here is his resistance to the “comfort zone” or anything that might mean he’s fitting into anyone’s expectations other than God’s.

I wasn’t shocked by anything from Driscoll until I saw this lately: http://teampyro.blogspot.com/2011/08/pornographic-divination.html

Yep – that is shocking. I hope MD gets to read it.

How do solve a problem like Mark? How do you catch a cloud and pin it down? On one hand you love his enthusiasm for church planting, on the other hand you are concerned with his theology.

Hi Michael
His theology doesn’t concern me much. If God has shown him some shocking things, it’s because he is ministering to people who have experienced some shocking things (and I know he has been doing so for years). Perhaps he shouldn’t share such details, but it’s his motormouth that’s the problem, not his theology. And I really think we needed Mark Driscoll to smack us around a bit, don’t you? Most prophets tend to do that.
Thanks for the comment!
Blessings,
Mike

‘Comfort zone’ has inspired me to look more into this. I see too many in comfort zones that they call Christendom. We are locked in a room that has all its doors open. Thanks, Mike, and thanks Steve from LinkedIn mention. Chuck

Here’s a Driscoll quote from an Acts 29 sermon (it’s a great podcast – lots of practical advice from many different speakers): “If your church roll is bigger than your attendance, your church is dying.”
